R. Roy Keaton, a Weatherford native, became Special Representative for Lions Clubs International in 1934, establishing Lions Clubs across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Roy was named Assistant Secretary General in 1945 and heir apparent to succeed Melvin Jones, the Founder of Lionism. In 1948, Roy Keaton was named Director General becoming head of the world's largest service organization. Under his leadership, Lions Clubs membership increased from 380,000 members to more than 600,000 Lions and the scope of Lionism spread from 28 to 102 countries. In 2000 there are more than 1.4 million Lions Clubs members in 185 countries and geographic locations.
