O templo deve-se à iniciativa do abade, e depois Bispo de Miranda, D. Diogo Marques Mourato que, pouco antes de morrer, e por procuração datada de 1 de Agosto de 1748, encarregou o deão da Sé do Porto, D. Jerónimo de Távora e Noronha, de fazer reverter os seus bens a favor da construção de um novo templo em Santiago do Bougado.
A escolha do arquitecto, da responsabilidade do deão, recaiu, naturalmente, sobre Nicolau Nasoni que, de imediato, desenhou as primeiras plantas do templo. A documentação consultada por António Cruz e que se encontrava no arquivo paroquial da igreja, comprovam a autoria de Nasoni, que surge muito claramente nos aponstamentos do escrivão, de 1754.
Nesta data, encontrava-se Nicolau Nasoni a trabalhar na finalização dos Clérigos, e a aprovação do projecto da torre que remata este complexo arquitectónico havia ocorrido poucos meses antes. Tal proximidade cronológica poderá explicar as semelhanças que se verificam entre as fachadas da célebre torre da cidade do Porto e a da igreja do Bougado.
O enquadramento da porta e do janelão que se lhe sobrepõe é bastante análogo, num desenvolvimento linear e plano, que se afasta das composições mais escultóricas de Nasoni, mas que não deixa de revelar grande similitude com a Torre dos Clérigos. O mesmo acontece em relação ao medalhão superior, sobre ambas as portas, mas no caso do Bougado alusivo a D. Diogo Marques Mourato e à edificação do templo, em 1754, referindo ainda a reforma patrocinada pelo abade Gaspar Barbosa Pimenta e Sol, em 1817.

The temple is due to the initiative of the abbot, and later bishop of Miranda, D. Diogo Marques Mourato that shortly before his death, and by proxy dated August 1, 1748, instructed the dean of the Cathedral of Porto, D. Jerónimo de Noronha and Tavora, making reverse its assets in favor of building a new temple in Santiago, Bougado.
The choice of architect, the responsibility of the dean, fell naturally on Nasoni that immediately drew the first plans of the temple. On that date, was Nasoni working on finalizing the Clergy, and project approval of the tower which completes this architectural complex had occurred a few months before. This chronological proximity may explain the similarities that exist between the facades of the famous tower of Porto and the church of Bougado.
The frame of the door and picture window that overlaps it is very similar, and a linear development plan, which departs from the more sculptural compositions of Nasoni, but nonetheless reveal a great similarity with the Tower of the Clerics. The same is true of the upper medallion on both doors, but in the case of the Bougado elusive to D. Diogo Marques Mourato and the building of the temple in 1754, referring also to reform sponsored by the abbot Gaspar Barbosa Pimenta e Sol, in 1817.
