A data da construção encontra-se gravada no frontispício, 1780.
Desconhece-se exactamente quem foi o autor da iniciativa. Há quem aponte para o Abade Inácio Pimentel.
Porém, ela foi inaugurada em 1780, sendo pároco da freguesia, há três anos, o Abade Manuel Joaquim de Oliveira.
Era, como ainda hoje, um templo de uma só nave. Na capela-mor encontravam-se o respectivo altar e a tribuna com o sacrário. Lateralmente, dava acesso à sacristia, do lado esquerdo, e à casa da fábrica, do lado direito. No corpo da igreja, separado da capela-mor pelo arco cruzeiro, havia três altares laterais, púlpito, pia baptismal e coro.

It was, as now, a temple of a single nave. In the chancel were their altar and the tabernacle podium. Laterally, gave access to the sacristy on the left, and the house of the factory, on the right. In the body of the church, separated from the chancel arch, had three side altars, pulpit, baptismal font, and choir.
