There are two choices for location that are publicly accessible, the road to Blea Tarn or the footpath up to Blea Tarn. The footpath can be discounted as the footpath is too high. At the required position relative to the farm and mountains the view of the farm from the footpath shows three roofs to the farm, not the two in the painting. The height at the roadside is reasonably correct, however the farm is too close from the road. This indicates that Heaton Cooper probably painted at a small distance from the road, possibly one of the adjacent fields, sufficiently high so that the field wall is below the painting. Up until a few years ago there was a wide verge to the side of the road, which would have allowed up to 10 metres of extra distance. Today the verge has been enclosed as a sheep pen.

William Heaton Cooper was the son of the Lakes artist Alfred Heaton Cooper. He was a member of the Royal Institute of British Watercolourists and a past president of the Lake Artists Society. As well as being a fine artist he was also a pioneer climber, being life president of the Fell & Rock Climbing Club. For a complete biography see
