This statue is another of the approximately 200 replicas that were placed around the country in 1950 by the Boy Scouts of America in honor of their 40th anniversary. This particular one is located in downtown Gary, IN across the street from city hall.

There are many other interesting statues and monuments in this area of this once proud city. Located in Northwest Indiana, in the shadow of Chicago, Gary is best known for its rich steel-making history. Located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, there are at least four fully-integrated steel mills that call NW Indiana home.

The statue sits in an area adjacent to the South Shore Railroad Gary Station, where many commuters catch the train to go into Chicago. two blocks down the street is the US Steel Yard, home of the South Shore Railcats, an independent baseball team.
