Long Description:

Depicted Baroque sculptural group of Holy Family (Svatá Rodina), work of sculptor Jan Jirí Šlanzovský, decorates main public space of Ceský Brod - Námestí Arnošta z Pardubic (Arnošt of Pardubice Square).

The Holy Family consists of the Child Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph. Veneration of the Holy Family was formally begun in the 17th century by Blessed François de Laval, the first bishop of New France, who founded a Confraternity. The Holy Family was a popular theme in Christian art. An oil painting by Joos van Cleve of the Netherlands, dated to about 1512, is on display at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Michaelangelos' tempura rendition (c.1506) hangs in the Uffizi in Florence. A Holy Family by Guilio Romano is on view at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. [wiki]

The original Baroque sculptural group was sculpted from sandstone by Jan Jirí Šlanzovský in 1722-1723. Work was the result of a commission by the local municipal council, and funded by the bequest of Terezie Tlapalová. In the 1990s, the crumbling statue underwent restoration, and was moved to the Podlipanské Museum. So, the sculptural group which you can see in Square, is a sandstone copy of original work sculpted in 1996.
