Harry Potter is spending the summer with the Dursley’s. Ron Weasley manages to rescue Harry from the Dursley’s. Harry and Ron find that they cannot catch the Hogwarts Express and instead take a magic Ford Anglia to Hogwarts.

At Hogwarts the caretakers cat is mummified. Harry, Ron and Hermione investigate and learn that a student had died fifty years previously in a chamber at Hogwarts. Harry comes under suspicion when he starts talking to a snake in Parseltongue. Only the heir of Slytherin should have this power, and the heir should also be able to open the chamber.

Harry manages to contact a ghost called Moaning Myrtle. She puts Harry in touch with Tom Riddle, who years ago had accused Hagrid of entering the Chamber of Secrets. Hagrid tells Harry and Ron to follow the spiders to find out about the chamber monster. After an encounter with a colony of spiders Harry and Ron work out that Moaning Myrtle was the student killed fifty years ago.

Hermione has been petrified, and in her hand is a piece of paper describing a basilisk. Harry and Ron deduce that the basilisk is the chamber monster. Before they can act they find out that Ginny Weasley has been taken to the chamber. Harry goes into the chamber and finds Ginny and Tom Riddle. Tom Riddle turns out to be a younger version of Voldermort. Using a magic hat and a phoenix, summoned from Dumbledore, Harry destroys Tom and wakes Ginny.
