History
After the preparatory college founded in 1564 the Jesuit was initially housed in existing buildings , began in 1620 Étienne Martellange with the construction of a large church. The eminent architect had joined the Order already in 1590 in Avignon as a novice to the Jesuit order . 1628 took over a native of Piedmont François Royer de La Valfenière only to the foundations gediehenen work . 1655, the still unfinished building was consecrated . Was not until six years later with the establishment of the facade perfection.
Since 1938, the church serves as a museum of provincial Roman and medieval sculpture.
Architekture
As an unaccompanied by side chapels hall , the church refers back to the mother church of the Order, Il Gesù . From there, the Corinthian pilasters and the galleries were taken over the side chapels. With reduction of the Roman prototype , however, dispense with a transept . The relatively steep suggest the southern French Gothic style as a second source of inspiration. At the hall church of the 14th century (about Saint -Didier , Avignon ) also reminds the Barrel, which appears almost like a cross vault with its deeply cut lunettes .
Roman influence , however, characterizes the design of the facade . She also refers back to the Gesù and its rich succession. The divided by a verkröpftes beams and an attic area in two floors facade is divided by Corinthian pilasters . The five-axis basement is rejuvenated by S-shaped volutes to Dreiachsigkeit of the upper floor , which is crowned by a shallow triangular pediment . The central axis is emphasized not only by the framed by a shrine portal and a richly profiled windows upstairs, but also by the sculptured reliefs of the remaining wall above the portal field. At the height of which appear in the side axes empty niches figure whose framing aedicules be crowned by blown-up triangle or arc segment gables. Despite the clear outcropping exemplarity Roman facade designs , is dispensed with their dynamic rhythm . So in Avignon the main sub- elements are not staggered in depth. The wall relief remains much more of the surface arrested. The baroque model is systematized and calms within the meaning of French classicism .
