This "Hughes Gap" is primarily known as an access point on the Applachian Trail - north bound towards the Roan Mountains, south bound towards Little Rock Knob overlook.

No information found on why called "Hughes Gap". Within the gap is a four to six car parking area used by hikers. Paved access road up from Tennessee and gravel out of North Carolina.
