GLENDALE
BUSINESS
DISTRICT
DEVELOPED 1896 - 1921
SETTLED IN 1892, GLENDALE DEVELOPED ITS OWN "DOWNTOWN"
WHERE RESIDENTS OBTAINED THE GOODS AND SERVICES THEY NEEDED.
IT WAS ALSO WHERE LOCAL FARMERS SHIPPED THEIR FRUITS, VEGETABLES,
AND LIVESTOCK THEY RAISED TO NATIONAL MARKETS. GLENDALE
BLOSSOMED INTO THE LARGEST TOWN IN THE NORTHWEST SALT RIVER
VALLEY. SEPARATED FROM PHOENIX BY MILES OF OPEN SPACE,
GLENDALE'S DOWNTOWN HAD BANKS, GROCERIES, THEATERS,
DEPARTMENT STORES AND OTHER BUSINESSES. THE ROLE OF THE
DOWNTOWN CHANGED BY THE 1960S AS THE AREA GREW AND THE
AUTOMOBILE PROVIDED OTHER SHOPPING OPTIONS. YET GLENDALE
BUSINESSES AND GOVERNMENT WORKED TOGETHER SINCE THE 1980S
TO AGAIN MAKE THE AREA A REGIONAL DESTINATION.
