In 1811 he published "The Necessity of Atheism"[3,4], and consequently was expelled from University College, Oxford on the 25th March along with his friend the poet Thomas Jefferson Hogg. As a result he quarrelled with his father[2] from whom he became estranged. In March he and Hogg found lodgings in Poland Street[1,5], where he remained until May. On the 28th of August he eloped to Scotland with his first wife, the 16 year old Harriet Westbrook.
