For over 20 years, this particular P-4 was used by Plant 42 firefighters to provide crash rescue support during Blackbird test flights. It was placed on display in airpark in November 1994.
Over 500 P-4s were delivered to the USAF in the 1970s. They were used at all Air Force installations with an active flying mission, including space operations and at Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve bases. Versions were also built for the U.S. Navy and Royal Australian Air Force as well as many civilian agencies.
The P-4 had all aluminum cab and body to reduce overall vehicle weight and a top speed of 60 mph. The 425 hp Caterpillar engine powered the fire truck as well as all six wheels. The truck carried 1500 gallons of water and 180 gallons of foam. The pump was rated at 1200 gallons per minute.
