The Sculpture website tells us about Martyn:
Sculptor, carver, business owner
Born in Worcester, Worcestershire. He started out as a stonemason and wood carver. Between 1874-88 he worked in partnership with Alfred Jeffrey Emms*. Herbert founded H.H. Martyn in 1888. His son Alfred William Martyn (born in Cheltenham in 1870) joined the business in 1898 as a partner along with Henry Arthur Dutton. From 28 May 1900 the partnership was reformed and incorporated as a limited company. Herbert also handed over most of the responsibility for the company to his son Alfred who was chairman and managing director between 1898-1927.
