This marker deals with three Civil War points. By 1864, Stony Creek was the northern terminus of the Weldon Railroad and supplies for Petersburg had to be carted from here north. Raids by Union Calvary commanded by Gen. Wilson and Gen. Gregg were conducted here. Lee's Calvary was involved in Wilson's action.

HISTORY AT STONY CREEK

IN 1864, SUPPLIES FOR LEE'S ARMY WERE
CARTED FROM THE WELDON RAILROAD
HERE TO PETERSBURG. HERE THE
UNION CAVALRYMAN, WILSON, RETURNING FROM
HIS RAID TO BURKEVILLE, FOUGHT AN
ACTION WITH LEE'S CALVARY, JUNE 28-29,
1864. THE PLACE WAS RAIDED BY THE
UNION CAVALRYMAN, GREGG, ON DECEM-
BER 1, 1864.

Wilson is General James Harrison Wilson and Gregg is Brigadier General David McMurtrie Gregg.

The Weldon Railroad from Wilmington was an important lifeline for the Confederate Army during the siege of Petersburg and the railroad was thus an important Union target.
