Sited on the edge of the village green this double-sided sign was donated by the WI.

On the east side, facing the main road, above the village name is the escutcheon of the De la Haye family with the Church of St.John the Baptist as seen from the south to the left and a front view of The Old Forge Garage complete with old motor and its petrol pumps. Below the village name we see the WI icon with representation of water and a Pike to the left and a cormorant to the right for Abberton Reservoir.

On the west side we see the church from the north and the old forge from the rear either side of the escutcheon whilst a pair of tufted ducks swim and a common tern flies above the water of the reservoir.

After the Norman Conquest the De la Haye family owned a great deal of land around the area and with the word 'layer' - translated as 'owned by' - it was natural to keep the name for the village through many changes of ownership.

De la Haye. Argent, a fesse gules charged with two mullets of the field between six martlets sable.
