Starší verze znaku mesta Brna doplnená díky úspešnému ubránení se Švédum o císarského dvouhlavého orla a inicálami F III., které symbolizovaly císare Ferdinanda III., který brnenský znak polepšil. Tento erb byl platný kolem roku 1646, v originále je však s barvami otocenými proti soucasnosti, kdy je první cervený pruh a po nem bílý.
Gotický štít s cerveno - bílým pruhováním má symbolizovat soutok rek Svitavy a Svratky, a protože je Svitava svojí mohutností zhruba polovicní vuci Svratce, tak i na znaku mesta je horní bílý pruh polovicní oproti spodnímu. Cervené pruhy symbolizují mesto Brno jako rozdelovatele techto rek, které se stékají na jih od mesta.
