February 26, 2013 Changed The Santa Cruz Police Department Forever. sergeant Loran Butch Baker and detective Elizabeth Butler were contacting a suspect in a sexual assault case. During the contact, the suspect rushes out of the home shooting and fatally wounding both officers within seconds. The suspect returned to the scenes and was killed in a shootout with officers that responded to assist their fallen comrades. While standing watch over this community Butch and Elizabeth understood the risks and ever present danger. They were the first officers killed in the line of duty in the history of the Santa Cruz Police department.
In memory of detective Elizabeth Chase Butler for her Honorable and courageous service and ultimate sacrifice to this community. End of watch, February 26, 1013.
