Village sign for Coddenham, Suffolk. At the junction of School Road, Church Road (B1078) and High Street.
The sign depicts the church as the main feature, and below depictions of a pig, a windmill, and a Roman centurion helmet.
The area is agricultural, most notably pig farming. Coddenham had its own windmill, of the post and roundhouse type, sensibly situated atop the hill above the village. Only the name now remains, being commemorated at Mill Cottage in Mill Lane off High Street. The parish is of archeological significance and includes, adjoining the river Gipping opposite Baylham, the Roman site of ‘Combretorium’, an important posting station at the junction of two Roman roads. The presence of the Romans is also witnessed by many scatter finds, coin hoards, brooches and a cemetery site.
In 2002 the village won the Calor Village of the Year competition, and the award is next to the village sign.
