Bertram Wagstaff Mills was born in August 1873, the son of Halford Mills owner of the Reformed Funeral Company. Bertram Mills was brought up on the family farm at Chalfont St Giles, where he developed a skill for horse riding.

In his early life he worked in the family business, until the outbreak of World War One. He did service with the Royal Medical Corps, becoming a Captain. After the war he developed an interest in circus. He bet a friend that he could form a circus within a year. He won his bet and formed Bertram Mills International Circus.
The circus prospered and became a household name in Britain. Between 1930 and the 1960s the circus appeared at Olympia every Christmas. His circus attracted famous guests to its audience, including the Royal family and Winston Churchill.

Bertram Mills was married to Ethel and had two sons, Bernard Notley and Cyril Bertram. Bertram Mills died on 16 April 1938 and is buried at St Giles Church in Chalfont St Giles. His two sons ran the circus after his death until the 1960s, when TV forced the circus to close.
