The inscription is on one face of the memorial with the other three faces having relief carvings of Faith, Hope and Charity. The inscription, that is carved into stone, reads:

AND SENIOR CAPTAIN OF THE
ROYAL HOSPITAL AT GREENWICH
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE
FEBRUARY 20TH 1849
AGE 83 YEARS.
ENTERED THE ROYAL HOSPITAL
SCHOOL 1778. IN 1781 WAS BOUND
APPRENTICE TO THE SEA SERVICE
AND REMAINED ACTIVELY ENGAGED
UNTIL THE PEACE
HAVING GAINED
BY HIS MERIT, PROMOTION TO THE
RANK OF POST CAPTAIN: APPOINTED
1842 A CAPTAIN OF THE HOSPITAL
IN WHICH HE WAS RESPECTED AND ESTEEMED. THE SUCCESS ATTENDING
HIS NAVAL CAREER WAS SUCH AS
COMMONLY ATTACHES TO THAT HIGH
MORAL RECTITUDE AND UNIFORM
STEADINESS OF CONDUCT BY WHICH
