Con artist, Nick Zakian, sweeps into town and into the local karaoke pub, The Merlin’s Cave. The landlord John has a much younger wife, Alison. Nick pretends to be a talent scout that can get Alison into the big time. John goes along with this, even advancing £2,000 towards recording costs.

The village newsagent is plagued by yobs and Nick manages to get them arrested in a sting. This gives Nick access to the newsagent’s keys. Nick also befriends an old lady with a big house. He persuades her to sell her house and move to the seaside, with him arranging the details.

Alison is part of a duo with Danny, the local hairdresser. Nick keeps telling John that Danny is a rival to him for Alison’s affections. Things come to a head when Nick takes Alison and John to a recording session. Nick gets John high on drugged biscuits whilst he makes love to Alison. Danny turns up, as arranged by Nick as insurance. Instead of getting a kiss from Alison through the window, he ends up kissing her bottom. Outraged he returns with a red hot poker. This time Nick sticks his bottom out of the window and he gets the poker.

The next day when John gets up he finds that his bank account has been raided and that the recording studio has been broken into. Alison is left waiting at the side of the road waiting for Nick, who never shows. The newsagent’s shop has been robbed and the old lady is left homeless.
