"According to the legend, one day the river of Casal Velho, after a great flood, overflowed and wiped out the whole village, leaving only own land for cultivation. When the time came to sowing, the soil was tilled, but at any given site, the oxen stopped and knelt.
Finding odd the case the peasants asked, among fearful and dazzled the reason for such extraordinary event. They talked and decided to dig into the soil and see if they could discover the reason. They put down to work, dug and found the image of Santa Maria. Had been buried during the invasion of the waters. They took her to the chapel and every night the Santa disappears to where you found out. Touched the heart, the locals built the Church, deliberately to store the image. Manage to build it over there and transferred the image of the Santa. She never left again."

"Segundo a lenda, um dia o Ribeiro do Casal Velho, depois de uma grande enchente, transbordou e arrasou toda a povoação, ficando apenas terreno próprio para cultivo. Quando chegou o tempo das sementeiras, a terra foi lavrada, mas, em determinado sítio, os bois paravam e ajoelhavam.

Estranhando o caso, os camponeses perguntaram-se, entre receosos e deslumbrados, a razão de tão extraordinário acontecimento. Consultaram-se e resolveram revolver o solo e ver se conseguiam atinar com o milagre. Meteram mãos à obra, cavaram e encontraram a Imagem de Santa Maria. Ficara subterrada, aquando da invasão das águas. Trazem-na para a Capela e todas as noites a Santa desaparece para o local onde fora encontrada. Tocados no coração, os habitantes do lugar pensam em construir a Igreja, de propósito para guardar a Imagem. Conseguem edifica-la e para lá transferem a Santa. Desde então, não mais saíu de lá."
