On either side of the entrance to the Monterey Ca. Post Office is a lovely tile mural set into the wall

On the left hand side is "The Landing of Sebastian Viscaino at Monterey, December 16, 1602".

On the right hand side is "Raising the flag at Monterey by the forces of Commodore Sloat, July 7, 1846."

The tiles are marked as being from the famous Gladding McBean tile company, but the artist is not mentioned.
