Hancock County was created from a portion of Brooke County in 1848. It is the smallest and furthest north county in West Virginia. This is the third courthouse in this location and was built after the previous burned in 1920. The three-story stone building is in a Greek Revival style. An annex has built next door housing many of the county offices.
