Settlers fled the area after the Amidon Affair in August 1862. In November of that year, a scouting party of soldiers and former civilians returned to retrieve their cached goods. The settlement had been burned and Indians were spotted near the falls. The order to charge was given and all Indians save one escaped. The officers thought they had killed the nephew of the renegade Inkpaduta. Instead they killed a visiting man, one who had nothing to do with Amidon murders or the sack of Sioux Falls. His name was Makana Na Ota E E'n and his only crime was that he was an Indian. He was later buried at a nearby high point by his returned Indian comrades. It wasn’t until 1931 that his sister revealed his true identity. His exact gravesite is not known but is believed to be in upper Terrace Park.
