EN: The Blue and the White House, also called Reichensteinerhof and Wendelstörferhof, are two adjacent baroque patrician houses on Rheinsprung.
The two buildings are matched, but not completely symmetrical. They were built from 1763 to about 1775 by architect Samuel Werenfels as combined residential and commercial building for two local manufacturers, the brothers Jacob Sarasin (1742-1802, white house) and Luke Sarasin (1730-1802, Blue House).
The two houses are among the most important examples of Baroque architecture in Basel. Since 1942 and 1968 respectively, they are the property of the canton. Today the departments for Economy, Social Welfare and Environment of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are located in the two houses.
DE: Das Blaue und das Weisse Haus, auch Reichensteiner- und Wendelstörferhof genannt, sind zwei nebeneinander liegende barocke Patrizierhäuser am Rheinsprung.
Die beiden Gebäude sind aufeinander abgestimmt, jedoch nicht völlig symmetrisch. Sie wurden von 1763 bis etwa 1775 vom Architekten Samuel Werenfels als kombinierte Wohn- und Geschäftshäuser für zwei lokale Fabrikanten gebaut, die Brüder Jakob Sarasin (1742-1802, weißes Haus) und Lukas Sarasin (1730-1802, blaue Haus).
Die beiden Häuser gehören zu den bedeutendsten Zeugnissen der Barockbaukunst in Basel. Seit 1942 bzw. 1968 sind sie Eigentum des Kantons. Heute sind darin die Departemente für Wirtschaft, Soziales und Umwelt des Kantons Basel-Stadt untergebracht.
