"The so-called Republic Monument (also Republic Monument) in Vienna commemorates the establishment of the Republic of Austria on 12 November 1918 . It is located at Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring between Parliament House and Palais Epstein before Grete Rehor Park.
Description
The monument consists of three busts of the Social Democrats Jakob Reumann , Victor Adler and Ferdinand Hanuschplatz that each resting on a pedestal. Behind it are three perpendicular rectangular granite blocks, on which, in turn, a fourth square is horizontal. In these is the inscription "The memory of the establishment of the Republic on 12 November 1918 " engraved with the words "" establishment of the republic are written larger than the rest, the monument stands on a slightly raised platform and is about three steps. Left and right of the stage, there are two lower square, on the 12 November each year flower arrangements are made. The busts were created by the sculptors Franz Seifert (Reumann), Anton Hanak (Adler) and Mario Petrucci (Hanuschplatz, to a design by Carl Wollek ) created.
History
The inauguration took place on 12 November 1928, the tenth anniversary of the proclamation of the First Republic instead. Due to its unique reference to the Republic and social democracy , the monument of conservative and fascist circles was treated with hostility. As part of the elimination of democracy and the establishment of the Austro-fascist regime there was initially Kruck Cross flags and a portrait of Engelbert Dollfuss overhangs and finally removed in 1934, but not destroyed but stored in the stadium hall. As of 30 Anniversary of the founding of the Republic in 1948, it was rebuilt. 1961 in a bomb attack the rear of the monument was slightly damaged, the background of the attack were not released until today."
