Located in front of the Best Western Miners Inn Convention Center on N Main Street is a historical marker that reads:

Gas Works

Site of the Yreka Gas Works
which on Dec. 17, 1859 first
lighted Yreka streets.
The gas was made by burning
pine pitch.

I purchased a historical book of Yreka as part of the popular Images of America series and was disappointed not to be able to find a picture or any reference to the Gas Works company once located at this site.

If you want to visit another 'First' in Yreka, there is another historical sign that looks just like this one that stands in front of Yreka's first log house and can be visited here.

Group that erected the marker: Siskiyou County Historical Society

Address of where the marker is located. Approximate if necessary:
Best Western Miners Inn Convention Center
N Main Street
Yreka, CA USA

URL of a web site with more information about the history mentioned on the sign: Not listed
