It is hard to imagine what life was like back in 1557. Religion was prominent and the King ruled. Wo betide anyone who upset the apple cart. Penalties were hash. Most people were burnt at the stake while others were starved to death.

On the Church boundary wall, near the entrance to the church grounds is a blue plaque placed there by the Wye Historical Society. On this plaque are the following words

"Near this spot
in January 1557
two men of Kent
John Phillpot of Tenterden
and
Thomas Stephens of Biddenden
were burnt at the
stake for their
faith"
