The Sangiran area is one of the major sites for the recovery of early human fossils, in particular "Home Erectus", and has played a key role in our understanding of human evolution. Sangiran is located ~15kms north of the central Java city of Surakarta (nickname, which is usually used, Solo). Since 2012 there has been a large and modern museum to house and display the fossils discovered, and to explain the nature and importance of the site to the public.

The Museum has three main separate galleries, each containing displays, models, diorama, and providing information on the discovery of the fossils, their importance, and of archaeology. Well presented and interesting displays. As the Museum is inside the discovery area, I decided to use its location as the waymark point.

The natural starting point for a Museum visit is the city of Solo. From here visitors can drive, hire private transport ($20 for a motorbike for a day), or take a public bus from the Solo Bus Station. The route is sign posted, and the Museum easy to locate.

Regretfully, there are few visitors. A handful of Indonesian folk, the usual compulsory bus groups of school children, and the occasional tourist, such as myself. The Museum and site deserve better, unfortunately, the location is not on the tourist routes through Java. Entry (for foreigners is $1).
