"Next to Liverpool, no other city has played such a large role in the career of the Beatles besides Hamburg. In the heart of St. Pauli on Grosse Freiheit, Hamburg has now erected a monument to the "Fab Four".
Nearly half a century ago, it was here in Hamburg that the "moptops" from Liverpool launched their unparalleled career: at the beginning of the 60s, the Beatles took the hearts of Hamburgers by storm with their up to eight hour-long appearances at "Indra", "Top Ten" and the legendary "Star Club". In 2001, Oldie 95 programme manager Stephan Heller had the idea for a Beatles-Platz in Hamburg. The start of construction was a life-long dream come true for him : "Finally honour for the moptops. As a Hamburg youth, I was very proud that my had established itself as Germany's music city with our Beatles-Platz."
In the grooves between the granite slabs, there are steel bands engraved with about 70 song titles from the "Fab Four". At the edge of the disc, there are four square recessed lights that flash alternately, creating the impression of a rotating turntable. The highlights of the square are sculptures of famous musicians who are displayed as silhouettes in a stainless steel frame. Visitors to the square can insert themselves into the sculptures and so become a Beatle themselves."
