The castle has approximately the shape of an iron whose tip points to the south, and the length is 70 meters, the width is about 46 meters. The 1.80 to 2.50 meter wide perimeter consists of hewn sandstone blocks, which are supplemented in part by projection cube. Situated on a sandstone cliff top castle is separated from the lower castle by a steep rock step, in which the cistern.
The exact date of foundation of the castle is not known. Archaeological finds point to signs of human habitation already back in the late Stone Age and the Hallstatt period.
After dating of the masonry of the existing wall remains the foundation of the castle took place around the year 1100. Builders were probably the Counts of Leiningen. An approximately one kilometer from Roman villa may be served as a building material source for the late-Salian castle.
