In 1937 the architects Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller won the competition about designing the new city hall. The previous city hall located at Store Torv, had become to small and one of the requirements for the new city hall was that it should be "designet as an destinctly administrative building". Among the 53 proposals the panel of judges quickly found the winner. The winner proposal caused a lot of protests in the press, and it was later decided that the city hall should be added a more "grandiose style". With the addition of the 200 feet high tower with two clocks the goal was completed. The unusual tower caused quite some surprise; somebody even thought that the scaffold had not been taken down! later on the tower had become a popular landmark for the city. It is made of concrete and marble. In 1996 it was included on a national list of important architecture by the Danish Ministry of Culture.
