Opunake, the Riviera of South Taranaki, is an outstanding, natural surf attraction that draws visitors and surfers from all over the world.
Opunake is a small town on the southwest coast of Taranaki in New Zealand's North Island. It is also a popular tourist spot, having one of Taranaki's finest beaches. The beach is composed of volcanic blacksand and there are large rock pools to be found on the north-west end of the beach at low tide.
Opunake is a very popular beach with the local community. The beach can be dangerous in any size swell due to the southerly drift and the large rip at the southern end of the beach which pumps a lot of water out beyond the surf zone. There are some large holes always present at the beach. Opunake Beach has good facilities for beach goers and a motor camp situated only 50 metres from the beach. Opunake Surf Life Saving Club patrol weekends and public holidays during the summer months and there are also professional Lifeguards working during the school holidays.
Surfing: Surfing can be quite good at Opunake beach. The main bar at the northern end of the beach often provides good surfing waves (generally right handers). There are also many good point breaks in the nearby area. Opunake beach can be surfed on any tide and is offshore in a northeast wind.
