Castlepoint is one of the most spectacular sites along the Wairarapa coastline. Castle Rock rises some 162 metre high. Below, long stretches of beach and a sheltered lagoon provide opportunity for a variety of waterbased recreational pursuits.
The magnificent views of surf and sand at Castlepoint Beach are only an hours drive from Masterton on the Te Ore Ore Road also know as the Masterton Castlepoint Road.
Castlepoint is famous for its beach horse racing; a fantastic family day for the rare sight of horses racing up the Castlepoint beach. There are several Castlepoint fishing tournaments held throughout the year and these are open to all ages.
There are several excellent Castlepoint walking tracks which will take you to some great vantage points along the coast. If you're feeling energetic, climb the Deliverance Track up the magnificent 162 metre high Castle Rock, which reminded Captain Cook of the battlements of a castle and led to the area's name.
Surfing: The Gap(Castlepoint) in the Wairarapa is a sheltered beach break that has fairly consistent surf and can work at any time of the year. Works best in offshore winds from the west northwest with some shelter here from southwest winds. Able to handle light onshore wind. Windswells and groundswells in equal measure and the best swell direction is from the southeast. The beach breaks favour rights. Good surf at all stages of the tide. Often Crowded. It can even get crowded enough to be dangerous.
Parking: Plenty of parking right at the beach. You can even drive onto the beach.
