The Pioneer Family sculpture dominates the south end of the ND State Capitol Grounds. It is a moving, evocative sculpture, full of he sense of pride and purpose these families felt as they left civilization behind for the frontier. The relationship between the figures shows the unity of purpose in this family. It is clear that they all rely on one another. Blasterz think the lone wagon wheel suggests how they made the journey west.

"The father of this Pioneer family stands between the mother and a son. The mother cradles a baby, wrapped in a blanket, in her arms, their heads close together. The father looks forward, and holds his son's proper right hand; his proper right arm is around the shoulders of the mother. The boy's proper left hand rests on a wagon wheel (which per the artist is a symbol for civilization on the march). Sculpted foliage partially overlaps the bottom of the wheel"
