. Their major purpose is to provide the ministry, thence the public, with road condition and weather reports for each of the 62 local areas.
Road Weather Stations
There are 62 Road Weather Stations in the Province, primarily located in areas where weather conditions and local geography combine to create challenges for highway maintenance operations.
These stations have a standardized set of instruments that collect atmospheric data as well as pavement temperature and condition data. Reported parameters include:
• Air temperature, humidity, dew point temperature
• Precipitation amounts (water equivalent)
• Precipitation occurrence (portion of last hour during which precipitation was detected)
• Snow depth on the ground and accumulation
• Wind speed and direction
• Barometric pressure
• Pavement surface temperature
• Freeze Point of liquid on pavement surface
• Road Status (dry, moist, wet, snowy or icy)
