The historic Thomas F. Ricks House at 730 H Street in Eureka, California. The Ricks house is a two-story, three-bay dwelling, with a one & a half story rear addition. Characteristics that classify the Ricks House as Eastlake include: squared bay windows, vertical strips in the frieze, brackets extending from the vertical strips, narrow belt course, cornice and brackets over the windows and the wide band of trim under the cornice. A design detail that is unique only to the Ricks House is the stacked canted squared bay windows.
The house was built of redwood in 1885 for Mr. and Mr. Thomas Fouts Ricks by architect/builders Fred B. and Walter Butterfield. Between 1876 and 1894, Mr. Ricks owned and managed one of the most prosperous stables (Palace Stables, later called the Ricks Stables) in Eureka. Mrs. Ricks was prominent in real estate. In 1907, one year before her husband’s death, Mrs. Ricks leased for use as the St. Francis Hospital which closed in 1910. In 1925 the house was sold and became “The Palms” (a boarding house). In 1935 the Young Women’s Christian Association acquired the House and used it until the late 1980s when it was sold to the College of the Redwoods.
The Ricks House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 2, 1992. For more information on the house see (
