This path also divides, at the upper end of the quadrangle, paths going (L) to the Education Building, straight ahead to the gymnasium, and (R) behind a bronze STATUE OF JOHN W. MACKAY, by Gutzon Borglum.
This statue still stands in front of the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, formerly known as the Mackay Mines Building. It was donated to the University by Mackay's widow, Marie Louise, and his son, Clarence H. Mackay, who also provided endowments for the Mackay Mine Building. Both the building and the statue were presented to the campus in 1908.
The sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, later became famous for sculpting the figures on Mt Rushmore. His life and list of artistic accomplishments can be read about in more detail here.
John Mackay became one of the few Comstock Lode barons of Nevada making him one of the richest men in the world. His life can be read about in more detail here and here.
