This monument consists of a statue of Christopher Columbus made of Carrara marble poised atop a 70 ft. granite column. At its base is another marble figure of an angel holding a globe, allegorically representing the Genius of Discovery. Along the column are several reliefs of anchors and ships. It was designed by Sicilian sculptor Gaetano Russo and presented to the City of New York by the Italian-American community. The monument was dedicated on October 12, 1892 on the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the New World by Columbus. Over 10,000 people attended the dedication festivities.

The New York Coliseum was brand new in 1956 when it hosted the Fifth International Philatelic Exhibition. In fact it was the first show held there (along with an international auto show and a national photography show). The Coliseum was never a favorite with critics who have described it as “utterly pedestrian” and not fitting the curve of Columbus Circle very well. Plans to tear it down came and went but were finally realized in the year 2000. The building that now stands in its place is the Time Warner Center.

The stamp (along with a souvenir sheet and a couple of stationery items) was issued in conjunction with the Fifth International Philatelic Exhibition (FIPEX for short) held from 28-April to 6-May, 1956. The image on the stamp, which shows the Columbus Monument in addition to the New York Coliseum, was based on an architectural drawing provided by the firm of Leon and Lionel Levy.
