Registered on the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments, the impressive military construction that we can see today was built in 1823 and 1848. The fortification system, remarkably well preserved, was designed to stave off an attack on the Dauphiné by the Savoy Dukedom from the direction of the Chartreuse mountains, where the border between France and Piedmont once lay. On the city side, the ramparts, stairways, and casemate of the Bastille sprawl over 300 meters of vertical drop.
The Bastille is visited by some 600,000 people each year, approximately half of whom take the cable car from the city centre. The rest of the visitors go by car up the steep and narrow road from La Tronche, or on foot by one of the numerous signposted paths to reach the Bastille.
We used the cable car which is 7,50 € round trip.
