In Cambridge, east of the Alewife MBTA Red Line Subway Terminal, is the Mayor Thomas W. Danehy Park.

The park is located in the north end of Cambridge and is bordered by Sherman Street, Bellis Circle, Garden Street, New Street, and a railroad right of way on the north border. There are several entrances to the park. There is parking off Garden Street and New Street.

The park is 50 acres in size and is mostly open grassy fields. The area has a gentle slope to the center of the park. There are several softball/baseball fields, soccer fields, and a full track. Toward the south part of the park are basketball fields. Along the northern edge is a wetland area.

The pdf produced by the City of Cambridge has more information about this park. Initially, this area became a clay pit for New England Brick Company from 1847 to 1952. The city acquired this land and used it as a landfill facility from 1952 to 1971. The landfill was then capped, prepared to made into a park, and opened in 1990. When it opened, it added 20% more open space for the city.

In addition to the fields, the wetland provides needed storm water retention. It is actually sitting on an impervious liner about a foot above the water table, and situated above some of the land fill. The impervious layer prevents transfer of any contaminants from the landfill.
