Franklin Howard was a corporal in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He lived through that terrible carnage, and lived on to the age of 103. He was a member of the 12th Texas Infantry. Information on this company can be found at: http://12thtexasinfantry.org/

His military headstone stands in Rush Springs Cemetery and is engraved:

* He was 20 when the 15th president, James Buchanan was inaugurated.
* The first telephone call was made the year he turned 40.
* When Frankllin was 70, the first animated cartoon was copyrighted, and this was also the year of the San Francisco earthquake.
* Fifty years after the first telephone call, the first transatlantic call was made from London to New York.
* The Hoover Dam was completed the year Franklin turned 100.
* The day before Franklin passed away, the first regular transatlantic airmail service was established (Pan American Airways - New York to France).
