Originally the Riverside Land Company, the cemetery was originally a park, established in 1907. On November 27, 1914, Riverside Park Cemetery Association was established and the Olmstead Brothers firm was engaged to design the cemetery. A very beautiful setting, it now incorporates many memorials, including Firefighter and Police Memorials, a 911 Memorial, a rose garden flanked by much stonework and a columbarium, various veteran and war memorials, mausoleums, both public and private, and a bell tower containing the 1871 bell on loan from St. John's Cathedral.

The cemetery also contains the remains of several of Spokane's Pioneering Families. In 1971 it joined the Fairmount Memorial Association to become one of seven cemeteries associated with that group. There is also a funeral home and crematorium, Heritage Funeral Home, on site.
