Amanda Mallory was born the same year that the Nightingale Training School and Home for Nurses, the first nursing school based on the ideas of Florence Nightingale, was opened at St Thomas' Hospital in London.

1880: Tinius Olsen awarded a United States Patent for the Little Giant Testing Machine
1890: Alice Sanger becomes the first female staffer in the White House
1900: In France, the length of a legal workday for women and children is limited to 11 hours.
1910: Slavery in China, which has existed since the Shang dynasty, is now illegal.
1920: The 1920 Summer Olympics opens in Antwerp, Belgium. The Olympic symbols of five interlocking rings and the associated flag are first displayed at the games.
1930: Judge Joseph Force Crater steps into a taxi in New York City and disappears.
1940: The U.S. Army 45th Infantry Division (previously a National Guard Division in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma), is activated and ordered into federal service for 1 year, to engage in a training program in Ft. Sill and Louisiana, prior to serving in WWII.
1950: Lord Balfour criticizes the fact that rationing is still in force in Britain.
1963: 70,000 marchers arrive in London from Aldermaston, to demonstrate against nuclear weapons.
