The governor's palace served as the home for all the governors of Virginia until the capitol was moved from Williamsburg to Richmond in 1780.

This was the home for famous political figures that include Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. It is one of the largest buildings of the historic district, the other being the old capitol. The three story building is now turned into a museum, and to enter you will have to buy a pass at the visitor center at the buss station near the college.
