This quarrie was opened in 1932 for limestone production. Owner is "NV Winterswijkse Steen- en Kalkgroeve". Nowadays the quarrie is exploited by "Ankerpoort".
The limestone in this quarrie is formed about 240-236 million years ago.
It is socalled Dolomitic limestone.
After mining the limestone is crushed. Usage of crushed limestone is as fertilizer and in road construction.
There are three quarries, only one of them is in production. Another quarrie was transformed into a nature reserve. The groundwater is pumped away.
In the quarrie there is an nesting eagle-owl. You can watch the bird by internetcamera.
During factory holidays the quarrie is transformed into a theatre. Bleachers and a stage are placed and during the evening there are magnificent shows in the 30 meters deep pit. Sound is magnificent.
At specific moments the quarrie is opened for amateur geologists.
There is a reasonable chance to find a fossil. You also can find gold here. Unfortunately it isn't really gold, it is pyrite.
