What used to be home to Fitzgerald's Casino for many years is now home to the
BaseCamp Climbing Wall and facility. Unfortunately, this climbing wall is temporarily closed as of Dec. 11, 2013 until further notice. BUT... they plan to re-open in the near future with an even bigger and better facility to cater to those adrenaline junkies who just can't get enough.... climbing.
I passed by this building just a few days after it closed (what are the odds?), remembering the good old days of Fitzgerald's and upon looking up, realized quickly that the front of the building is one t-a-a-a-a-a-a-l-l climbing wall. Being in December and still snow on the ground, I can't imagine too many people taking advantage of this climbing wall in the dead of winter. But you never know, there are some folks out there that would probably do it in a blizzard.
The BaseCamp proudly advertises their climbing wall as the tallest in the world on their website at 164 feet, 40 feet taller than the previous world's highest in the Netherlands. Numerous other website and blog sites also mention this feat.
The following verbiage comes from the BaseCamp website as to their current status and future plans for this climbing wall and facility:
BaseCamp Closed For Renovations
The Whitney Peak Hotel has been given the opportunity in our renovation schedule to start a few days early, so BaseCamp will be closed immediately on 12/11/13. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Now For the Good News...
This closure is only temporary and once we re-open our doors, BaseCamp will be better than ever. Some of the new additions that will be featured at the property will be:
A “local-vore” inspired restaurant that will feature locally grown foods, regional wines and local craft beer
158 guest rooms and suites
CARGO, an 1,100 capacity concert venue on the first floor. At 5,000 sq. ft. it can be rented for private events as well!
Expanded hours for BaseCamp
“Active Lifestyle” property that brings together organic design, the great outdoors, a vibrant music scene and a fresh dining experience
Fitness Facility – a expansive fitness center will be added to the second floor
Continental Breakfast facility – hosted adjacent to BaseCamp in the former “Molly’s” space
Turning Reno “Outside In;” taking advantage of all that the Sierra Nevada’s have to offer, we’ll connect guests with the very best of the region.
Non-Smoking/Non-Gaming
Stay tuned, folks, it appears that the best is yet to come...
*NOTE* My photography skills sucked in taking pics of this climbing wall so I borrowed a pic from the BaseCamp website to use as the default pic. The other pictures in the gallery are mine. Sorry, it was early in the morning, 20 degrees outside and in the middle of December. Cut me some slack.
