This is exactly what it says -- a beautiful cemetery with an ugly truth behind it: that this is a very segregated city, even in 2013.

The Robert Lee Cemetery was established in 1891 and has been serving the (white) residents of this community ever since. (visit link)

This lovely Hispanic cemetery was created to serve the Hispanic residents of this rural community. There are about 75-80 burials here, most of them recent (reflecting the reality of demographic change in Texas). Presumably, the Hispanic residents of this town need not request burial at the Robert Lee Cemetery. Blasterz walked all over the 1200-grave Robert Lee Cemetery and saw no black or Hispanic surnames at all.

Ugly racism is obvious here in Robert Lee -- and we will leave it at that.

Blasterz really enjoyed this cemetery. With its multitude of colorful flower arrangements, cards and letters for the dear departed, some artistic sculptural tombstones, some humble homemade tombstones, benches for families to sit on when visiting their loved ones and personal mementoes of the deceased's lives, this was a happy, bittersweet, human place -- filled with life, love, and death.
