The location of the bridge was determined in the 1993 Rideau River Bridge Location Feasibility (Strandherd Drive/Armstrong Road) Environmental Assessment (EA) Study undertaken by the former Region.
In 2007 the preliminary and detailed design of the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge was started, incorporating transit facilities as appropriate. The bridge is designed to carry multiple lanes of vehicular traffic, with designated transit and bicycle lanes and a separate pedestrian path in each direction.
Given that the Rideau River has recently been designated a world heritage site by UNESCO, the design of the bridge was completed in partnership with Parks Canada and the National Capital Commission in compliance with the Federal Government design interests on heritage designated sites and all federal and provincial Environmental Assessment requirements.
